Over the past few months, a disturbing trend has emerged on the Stack Overflow platform. Data indicates that the number of questions asked has almost stalled, pushing activity levels back to those last seen in 2009, the year Stack Overflow launched. This trend was also confirmed by one of the platform's most active contributors, who highlighted these alarming figures.
The long-term decline in activity began to take shape around 2014. At that time, there was a significant improvement in moderator efficiency, leading to faster closure and removal of questions deemed "low quality." Many developers perceived this period as the advent of a strict moderation policy, where legitimate questions were often closed, and the platform generally became less welcoming. This led to an exodus of users who lost the motivation to ask questions.

A brief surge in activity was recorded in March 2020, when the global pandemic and subsequent lockdowns and remote work compelled developers to seek help online instead of consulting colleagues. However, this upturn was only temporary. By June 2020, the number of questions began to decrease again, even before the advent of large language models.
In June 2021, Stack Overflow was sold to an investment company for $1.8 billion, which in retrospect appears to be almost perfect timing by the founders before the terminal decline. A critical turning point occurred in November 2022 with the emergence of advanced artificial intelligence tools. These systems, often trained on data from Stack Overflow itself, can provide quick and high-quality answers, coupled with a friendly approach, which sharply contrasts with the sometimes impersonal and strict interactions with human moderators. It is no surprise that many developers preferred instant and hassle-free assistance from AI.
It appears that the influence of artificial intelligence merely accelerated a process already underway. Even without these tools, Stack Overflow might have gradually lost its significance, partly due to the change in moderation policy. This is a great shame for a platform that for many years helped countless developers overcome obstacles and successfully "gamified" knowledge sharing. Although the days of Stack Overflow in its original form are likely numbered, developer communities will not disappear. On the contrary, new spaces for mutual help and knowledge sharing are emerging and thriving, whether in the form of Discord servers, WhatsApp or Telegram groups, or other innovative solutions.
